1. Get to the child’s eye level when you are communicating with your child ; it helps to build a good rapport. To improve eye contact position yourself directly in front of the child.

Some examples are child seated on the dining table, parent in front on the chair, seat the child on a bean bag, sit on the floor in front of the child, lie down on the bed, keep your child on your body facing you etc. in these positions play with the child games child enjoys.

2) Hold objects that your child desires close to your face, or hold the object out and then slowly take it closer to your face as the child looks at the object.

3) Get simple picture books and photographs and teach your child to recognize the pictures and the people in the photographs

4) Teach your child “mirror play” ; imitating in front of a mirror
5) Utilize all the opportunities – during the time you bathe your child, feeding him/her, putting your child to sleep, changing the diaper ; to communicate with your child and make him/her more comfortable in your presence

6) Be interesting for your child; by performing animated face, making funny noises, making funny expressions. The more interesting you are to your child, the easier they get to know you and like to be with you and enjoy your company.

7) Play social expressive games like tickling, tossing etc to make your child connect and engage with you as well as to promote eye contact. Wait for your child to show you he wants more play.
